World Figure Skating Championships 2013 Mens SP and LP compared to Vancouver

All the quads attempted. Sometimes they were landed with full rotation and sometimes they were underrotated in either < or << with a fall. Tripling, doubling or singling doesn't get listed here.

Its so interesting how the sport progressed from 1988 to 2002 it has done again from 2010 to 2013!! Going from no quads to almost trying back to almost no one to almost everyone trying again!

Grand Prix FInal - Fernandez wins Long Program with 3 Quads!

Daisuke Takahashi won his first grand prix final by doing quads in both the SP and LP and was very impressive.

The major quad story was Fernandez doing the first 3 quad free skate since Brian Joubert in 2006 and winning the free skate.

When worlds happened in 2007 quads were done but the rules had changed to punish all jump underrotations severely and Jeffrey Buttle was the most hurt by that in 2007 worlds because it was a great worlds for quads overall.

So after that season and in 2008 worlds which was bad for quads and a lot were ruled UR and Buttle won with no quads and then in 2009 worlds and 2010 olympics and those two season saw the virtual elimination of quads from most skaters programs especially the SP. SP's became all triple events those two season for most.

But now things have changed and mens skating is back on track and quads are in SP and LP and you have a return of a 3 quad winning free skate. Kevin Reynolds has been attempting 3 quad free skates but now Fernandez has turned one into a winning LP at the GPF.

All medalists in mens did quads in SP and LP

Good to see that quads were done by medalists and also losers in both the SP's and LP's. When quad mistakes were severely punished and success underrewarded it would be an amazing sight to see even one attempted in a LP. But now with rules that mean skaters don't risk no points and get over 10 points they are back. Now SP's include skaters demonstrating all possible jump skills. No more "SP is way to important to try a quad-it's stupid to do quads" they are everywhere. This is not the 2008- 2010 era of quads being the worst and dumbest thing in the world a skater could do.

Gold Medalists - Patrick Chan - Canada
Silver Medalists Daisuke Takahashi - Japan
Bronze Medalists- Yuzuru Hanyu - Japan

Junior Worlds- Notable for Sui/Han!

Sui/Han of China won pairs and Han Yan of China won mens singles and both did quads in their free skates. Han Yan did a quad toe and Sui/Han did a quad throw salchow and a quad twist! They are doing very well with the technical elements. It used to be they would do one quad but mess up on another. They would get the quad throw but underrotate the quad twist but now they got both. They just have to worry about her and getting taller. Her getting taller seems inevitable.

Four Continents - Chan does 3, Sui/Han do 2 quads

Chan did three quads to win 4CC again. Last time Chan won 4CC it convinced Evan Lysacek not to do them anymore. Chan beat Lysacek who did a quad and out went quads for Lysacek. But now there is a different underrotation system and value system and quads are all over the place.

Sui/Han of China did a quad throw and quad twist

Men

Chan did a flawed on here- hands down.

Euros - Gachinski quad king

Artur Gachinski gave the performance of his senior career at Euros. It was a spectacular showing that was totally overshadowed by the performance of Evgeni Plushenko. Plushenko was narrowly beaten by Gachinski in the SP when he did a quad triple but Plushenko because of knee issues did not do one. Gachinski had the better SP and better jumps. He was really deserving of that first place in the SP. All throughout the GP season Gachinski was overshadowed by Michal Brezina and Javier Fernandez. Just like last season Gachinski appears to be doing best after nationals. Brezina and Fernandez were just no match for Gachinski at Euros. His performance was the most impressive to me. Plushenko did open with a quad and did a flaw free triple axel -triple toe combo in the LP and had a better program in the LP. It was opposite the SP in which Gachinski was far better than the .09 margin he had there.
